The Bed & Breakfast

The first question most people ask is, 'What exactly is a Bed & Breakfast?' By definition, a Bed & Breakfast starts as a private residence where the owners have chosen to host guests by providing comfortable, home-like accommodations. Those accommodations often include an evening snack and, of course, breakfast in the morning. Owners are the real difference between your average motel or inn and the Bed & Breakfast.

The owner takes a personal interest in all aspects of the guests' stay by offering additional gestures of hospitality, games and toys for children traveling with parents, access to the owners' private library, invitation to owner-family or local activities and the ability to address specific food choices that guests may require or like. Maybe most important is the fact that the owner of a Bed & Breakfast is a true 'member of the community' so they have recommendations for emergency services like car repair and health needs that can't wait for a clerk to 'find in the phone book' when needed.

The back of The Shaker Loft has two levels, each serving a different floor of the residence. Connecting the two levels is a wide wooden staircase that allows guests to stroll the landscaped grounds or take the small electric paddleboat out for a tour of the lake.

The upper and lower levels of the Bed & Breakafast are connected by a brick walkway that also links the wide wooden stairway and the permanently attached wooden dock. The rear of the residence also provides alternate, and private, entrances to individual rooms or floors.

The upper level deck stretches across the back of the bed & breakfast, perfect for an early morning breakfast or afternoon tea. The multi-tiered deck is intimate enough for one or two yet large enough to handle a family get-together or reception.

The opportunity to relax and 'get away' doesn't stop at the water's edge either. The Shaker Loft owns a small paddleboat that is available to tour the lake from the other perspective. Not feeling all that athletic? Worry not, the paddleboat is equipped with an electric motor to help get even the most pooped paddler back!

The private residence that is The Shaker Loft Bed & Breakfast was built in 1987-88 by the current owners' mother. The site, a little more than an acre of wooded ground on a 66-acre lake, was chosen for the peaceful serenity it offered. At the time, no thought had been given to actually making the residence into anything more than it was, a home in which to enjoy family and friends.
